Rei Ayanami is a character from Neon Genesis Evangelion and is a major character in The Knights of the Multiverse, introduced in Season 2. Originally the pilot of Evangelion Unit 00, she initially joined with Axis Zeon when they "rescued" her from her Earth and go on to pilot the Snapping Turtle, the Strike Dog, and later the Rabidly Dog, before joining the Crystal Knights.

Personality[]

For the most part, Rei is socially withdrawn, seemingly emotionless, and rarely interacts with anyone. She appears emotionless and depressed and will follow orders without question (which can sometimes be viewed as obedient and passive), even if it means risking her life. In battle, she has no self-preservation instinct and will not ignore orders to save herself.

Notes[]

Rei's story arc in this series is meant to be sort of a middle ground between Shinji and Asuka's arcs. While Asuka's arc is mainly focused around rising back up from one's despair better than ever before and Shinji's is about letting one's despair distort them into their darkest form, Rei's arc - since she never had to deal with any of the trials and traumas that her contemporaries did - is finding which path she should take. And yes, while she does join Axis Zeon at first and fights against the Knights several times in the first half of the season, this does not make her a definitive antagonist; this is mainly meant to be used as a way to get Rei out and see the Multiverse, with a lot more focus being put on her exploring the worlds Axis takes her to. It's also loosely based off of the struggle she goes through in the Rebuild movies, of her trying to find her own identity.

The idea behind giving Rei the blue JMS units in this series (aside from color coordination) is to give her her own unique Mecha (or in her case, series of Mecha) separate from her original Evangelion but still evoking some elements of it, much like Asuka & God Sigma and Shinji & the Epyon.
