Emily Tsurugi-Hono (officially designated as Model No. 815Z) is a character from Astro Boy (2003) and is a major character in The Knights of the Multiverse. She's a Droid created by the New Photon/Saotome Labs with the ability to transform the outside of her body into a powerful suit of armor and summon a sword, as well as the adoptive daughter of Great Mazinger pilot Tetsuya Tsurugi and Jun Tsurugi-Hono. She and her cousins Nyoka & Mohm Kabuto would go onto meet new friends and aid them in their future ventures of stopping criminals and exploring the Multiverse to make names for themselves.
Personality[]
Emily is a strong, kind-hearted, and determined young Droid that will (at least try to) do anything she puts her mind to. Taking the lessons from her parents' and uncle's tales of heroism to heart, she has a strong passion for protecting others and fighting evil, often motivated to stand and fight against anyone who threatens her friends/family, or anyone, really. She's always prepared to go into a fight, and will always fight with everything she's got, even when she's depleted almost all of her energy and is close to being destroyed. She's also frequently the one who'll make sarcastic quips and jokes aimed at her enemies. Even then though, she has a rather fiery temper when provoked, and will let her anger be known, more often than not whenever she's insulted or treated like a child (even if sometimes unintentionally), or getting furious with people that play with others' emotions. She can be a little stubborn at times, as she despises losing, though this sort of attitude mainly comes from wanting to make up for any failures she's responsible for. She's also a firm believer that robots have the right to fight back against anyone that means them harm, even if they're human.
Off the battlefield though, she's very friendly and gets along well with virtually everyone on the team, not minding hanging out with people that come off as "eccentric" or strange to everyone else (and on a team like this, that's a very good mindset to have). She generally acts as a cooperative "big sister" type towards the "younger" members of the Knights, deeply caring about her teammates, her cousins especially. This isn't some surface-level nice-girl traits programmed into her, either. While she may have inherited her father's fiery fighting passion, she also inherited her mother's heart, which transferred into her valuing family above everything else. She views almost everyone on the team as her family: to her, they simply ARE her brothers and sisters (with the exception of Agnes for... personal reasons). And as such, she loves them very much and is very dedicated to fighting with them, hanging out with them, offering a shoulder to cry on when they need it, and is willing to risk impossible odds in order to protect them
History[]
Pre-Series[]
Emily was created several years before the events of the series in an experiment to replicate Honey Kisaragi's Airborne Element Fixing Device (with Honey's permission, of course), with her "alternate form" being based off of her Armor Knight form. Needless to say, the project was a success, with Emily not only gaining a full level of consciousness held by all Earth Prime-originating 'droids, but she was also successfully able to summon her armor at will, having a sword that was as strong as either of Great Mazinger's Mazinger Blades (maybe even stronger) and, of course, developing a full consciousness like all other Droids on Earth Prime. She was handed over to the pilots of the Great Mazinger and Govarian, Tetsuya Tsurugi and his wife Jun, to help her get control over her powers and to see the world, with Jun giving her a human name to remind her that she has as much of a human heart as she does a warrior's spirit. As time passed, she started to develop closely with the veteran pilots, and the two eventually officially adopted her as their daughter, even going so far as to homeschool her. She would also frequently visit the Labs where she would meet her adoptive cousin Nyoka, and the two became very close friends.

Civilian Form[]
In her "civilian" form, Emily displays no special skills, aside from the enhanced agility and strength her robotic nature gives her.
- Antenna Ears
Emily's antennae ears are not only able to applify and hear sounds from a long distance away like her cousins - about 300 km away, to be precise - but they also act like a sonar, allowing her to analyze, intercept and even communicate through sound/radio waves. They're very useful for sensing invisible enemies and surprise attacks. The connection points to her face are also designed to be able to bend should it be pressed up against something.
- Dress
In her normal form, Emily wears a metal dress that, while obviously not as strong as the dress in her armor form, is enough to at least protect her body from bullets & low-frequency lasers.
- Sensors
Emily has a tiara-like headband lined with sensors atop her head, and a matching row of sensors on her chest, made to resemble a necklace.
Battle Mode[]
By crossing her hands in front of the sensors on her chest and shouting "Change!", Emily's replica-A.E.F.D. allows her to change her metallic dress & boots into a set of armor, which changes her body in various ways, including putting armor on her lower arms & legs (that include various weapons themselves), a new torso plate & even reformatting her skirt to be easier to move around.
- Armor
Emily's armor gives her a huge boost in strength (increasing it 10-fold) and is extremely durable, capable of taking a good amount of damage from lasers, missiles, and all sorts of other weapons. She's also able to spawn only a couple pieces at a time - normally her boots - so she can fly and get around much easier.
- Rocket Boots
- Emily gains a pair of steel boots. They have a set of thrusters on their heels that allow her to fly at great speeds, and the spikes on her kneepads & the sharpened blades on her feet also make for really good close-combat weapons.
- Blade Kick
- Emily performs a diving kick attack, with the blades on the tip of her boots slicing through her opponent.
- Hand Beam
- Emily has three Photon Beam blasters fixed onto the back of her armor's hand gauntlets.
- Rocket Punch
- Based off of her father's Super Robot, Emily can launch both of her armor's gauntlets like rockets at tremendous speed.
- Spiral Knuckle
- Inspired by Jeeg's Knuckle Bomber, Emily clasps her hands together and fires both of her Rocket Punches at once.
Emily's Sword
- Power Sword
Emily's main weapon is her sword. Despite its simple appearance, it is surprisingly powerful. It's made of a special material that makes it strong enough to slice through most metals - including the armor of most other Droids and Mecha - and deflect most laser, energy or Photon-based attacks. It can even absorb electrical attacks and either fire the attack back at the enemy or increase the sword's own cutting power.
When not in use, Emily keeps it in a fabric carrying bag. This is often where she keeps it whenever she and her friends are out on the town.
- Finishing Move: Shining Star
- Emily spins her sword in a circle in front of her body before performing a quintuple slash attack in the formation of a star; although sometimes she will perform the attack without the encircle move.
- Thunder Break
- By absorbing a bolt of electricity/lightning either from an oncoming attack or some other form of electricity, Emily is able to replicate her father's signature move by releasing it back at her opponent in a powerful burst.
- Thunder Smash
- Another way Emily is able to use the electricity her sword absorbs is by channeling it through the sword and then performing a downward slash. Not only does this make the strike even stronger, but it also electrocutes & fries the enemy outright.
- Lightning Double Slash
- Emily's sword absorbs a huge amount of lightning-type energy and, as its name implies, uses it to deliver two deadly slashes to its opponents - one diagonal slash and one vertical slash.
- Fire Sword
- Emily's sword is able to absorb Photon-generated fire, which then surrounds the blade in flames to allow her to deliver much stronger fire-enforced attacks.
Combo Attacks[]
- Spiral Photon Knuckle
Combo attack w/ Nyoka: Emily launches her Spiral Knuckle and Nyoka boosts it with a blast from one of her Photon Cannons, with the fists spiraling like a drill inside of a Photon-powered barrier as they accelerate forward.
- Moon Tiara Sword
Combo attack w/ Neo Sailor Moon: An idea the two came up with before the events of Season 2. Two of Usagi's Mirage Tiaras combine with the blade on Emily's sword, forming a large golden blade with a red gemstone in the center that completely cover the blade underneath, extending it a good bit and making it both impervious to laser fire and allowing it to deal an even more serious amount of damage.
- Triple Blade Buster
Combo attack w/ Usagi & Nyoka: Usagi and Emily stab their target from the front and back, then raise them into the air. Then, Nyoka drops from the sky and cuts through the enemy with her Laser Arm for the killshot.
- Double Lightning Buster
Combo attack w/ Ayako: Ayako generates a burst of electricity & sends it towards Emily, who catches it with her sword. The two then blast their enemy with bursts of lightning-like electric energy.
- Double Fire Lancer
Combo attack w/ Agnes: Emily and Agnes grab each other's hands, bringing the two close to embracing, and surround themselves in Agnes's fire aura and charge forward incredibly fast in a huge tornado of flame, with Emily's sword absorbing much of the fire's strength to deal a huge amount of damage to their target.
- Tsurugi Family Special
Combo attack w/ Great Mazinger: Emily launches a Spiral Knuckle at the same time Great throws its Great Boomerang. The Knuckle punches through the enemy to soften them up before the Great Boomerang slices them vertically in half. Just before they fall to the ground, Emily and Great pull out there swords to deliver the final blow, with Great cutting them down the chest while Emily dices the head off.
- Cosmic Moon Crash
Group combination attack: When facing an enemy that's too strong, Emily and her friends will combine their powers into a ball of pure, combined energy, with Emily supplying a blast from her Hand Beams. It can be formed with only four others, but for the truly powerful foes, all of them will partake in creating the ball, making it even bigger than it usually is.

Tetsuya Tsurugi & Jun Tsurugi-Hono[]
Tetsuya and Jun are the most important people in Emily's life, viewing the two as her mother and father. She's always willing to help them in their projects, and is quick to protect them, even at the cost of her own life. She used to cling pretty tight to the two of them before the events of the series, but as she started spending more time with Usagi, she started spending less and less time with them, though she still helps them out whenever she can. Of course, she does get annoyed by all of their bickering from time to time, and she'll be quick to call them out on their antics.
Koji Kabuto & Sayaka Yumi[]
As he is Tetsuya's adoptive brother, Emily thinks of Koji as her uncle, and (naturally) Sayaka as her aunt.
Nyoka[]
Nyoka and Emily and Nyoka have been close for much of their lives, knowing each other since Nyoka was only about a week "old". Despite being created by different parts of the New P/S Labs, they genuinetly see each other as cousins, with Em often encouraging the younger "cuz" to challenge herself more and to try & bond with the rest of the team as more and more members join their ranks. Heck, they've even bonded over being the adoptive members of their families. As such, she loves her older "relative" very much, with her being the only person Nyoka could turn to when she needed talk about anything she couldn't talk about with even her parents for a long time.
Mohm[]
Though obviously not as close to her as Nyoka, Emily still loves Mohm very much. And while she can be as protective of her littlest cousin as she is Nyoka at times, she's much more supportive of her efforts to get stronger and help out the team more, noticing this drive even before the three joined the Knights. Heck, she was the main advocate for her taking control of Orguss.

Usagi Tsukino[]
"Usa" as she like to call her is Emily's best friend outside of the family. The two quickly found themselves a pair of kindred spirits, with the two just sort of bonding over things like their incredible family histories, dreams to uphold their families legacies, and of course general optimism and desires to fight the forces of evil & uphold justice and all that. In the heat of battle, she serves as something of Usa's second-in-command, watching her back against any wayward enemies and take charge of the group when she's otherwise "preoccupied". She also knows when to step in and knock Usa down a peg when she pushes herself too far, going as far as hit her when she tried to go into battle while heavily wounded around the end of the season. She also strongly believes in Usagi's decisions and skills, believing that she'll make a great queen someday. She also acted as Emily's main confidant when she was still trying to process her feelings about Agnes, even with Usagi's odd joke about it.
Agnes[]
When Emily first met Agnes, she felt something... unusual. Her fiery hair, her soft brown eyes, her gentle behavior, something about all of it made Emily feel... well, something she'd never felt before. When Agnes officially joined the team, the two managed to form a good friendship, but Emily kept feeling attracted towards her, and always held the desire to take it one step further.
When she finally did confess her feelings (with "thanks" to some help from Usagi), she was a little disappointed when Agnes let her down due to the gap in their physical and "mental" ages, though she did at least readily accept that they could still be friends. So even if they aren't a couple, the knight-ly young Droid is willing to stand by her every step of the way against any foe they might face with their team.
Ayako[]
At first, Emily had a harder time trusting Ayako than Usagi after how much damage she had done (remember, she was the first of L.O.S.R.'s 'droids to turn to their side). However, she warmed up to her soon enough, and the two formed a solid friendship, mostly thanks to their connections to Usagi.
After Ayako was firmly placed onto the team, the two formed a very strong love-hate relationship, with Ayako's more youthful rebelliousness tending to grate with the Tsurugi-Hono daughter quite frequently. But while they do tend to argue frequently, they are otherwise very close and won't hesitate to defend each other when the time arises.
Roscarl[]
Emily thinks Roscarl is pretty cute and considers her a good friend. When the younger Droid developed her fighter instinct, Emily was very keen on helping her hone her skills, even giving her the old sword training every now and again to make better use of her dagger.
Lorelai Heinrich[]
Lorelai made friends with Emily quite quickly thanks to the Tsurugi Droid's friendly nature, though she also took a shine to how they both used power armor unlike the other members of the team.
Meryl[]
Emily had heard about Meryl while she was "training" in the New P/S Labs, and about her cool sounding "ice powers", and felt sorry for Nyoka when her friend had left.
While she treated her as a normal criminal at first, when she learned who she was, she was as determined as Nyoka to help her. She even commented on how "someone like her just isn't built for crime". From that point onward, while she's not as close to her as Nyoka is, Emily and Meryl consider each other good friends.

Ruri was the first true friend that Emily made outside the "family", and the same is true for Ruri. As such, the two have a strong, sister-like bond.

Of all the droids the Knights faced during their battles with the Renegades, Emily found herself stuck in a rivalry with the organization's own ninja-bot due partially to their usage of swords. She had some very negative thoughts on the ninja-bot at first after his hand in almost making Cosmo a mindless killing machine, thinking that he was just as bad as the monsters that made him. But after repeated encounters, she learned that he was actually a pretty nice guy, and the two developed a mutual respect for each other and the two often treated their clashing of swords as friendly competitions (although she could do without the "needless" comments on how reckless she is).

Like the others, Emily did not think very highly of Atros in their first few encounters in the first half of the first season, especially with how often she would drag Usagi away from the group's objective (it honestly just kind of got annoying after a while).

In her original incarnation, Emily actually had her own robotic mother and father units, and was part of a space colony project designed to study how human families could live in space, where Emily enjoyed hearing her father's stories about the Blue Knight, a powerful robot that was fighting for robot independence. However, when an anti-robot strike force kidnapped her parents, Emily managed to find the "hero" and immediately volunteered herself to become a super soldier, since while her life was part of a simulation, Emily's emotions and dreams were very much real. She went through the modifications to become a battle-bot knowing that her memories could be deleted forever, but took the chance, caring more about saving her parents from slavery. Luckily, Emily was fully restored, and decided she didn't want to be a warrior anymore. This new version of the green haired fighter robot sprinkles in a few elements from this original characterization, such as her dedication to saving those close to her, her strong love for her family, and most prominet a belief that robots had to the right to fight even humans when threatened; oh, and a love of stories.
- She's also been given a tweak to her personality, becoming a little more tomboyish attitude (in addition to giving her more of a unique personality compared to the other characters) similarly to characters like Makoto Kino/Sailor Jupiter or Aiko Senoo from Ojamajo Doremi, which is mostly meant to be a spin from her more battle-focused mind when she turned into a battle-bot. Although to be a little more specific, the characterization itself heavily based off of two sources: one, the basic charactersics of the Black Sentai Rangers, where she acts as the second-in-command of her team that's a serious/powerful fighter but is still openly caring and good-hearted around friends. The other is, as another tie towards the inspiration Usagi's group takes from the 00 Cyborgs Jet Link/Cyborg 002 as the speedy flier that never backs down from a fight but always tries to support their adoptive family; especially his (debatably most iconic) 1979 series incarnation or even his "softer" appearance in the Legend of the Super Galaxy movie, where his role as the protective "cool big bro" to 009 and bonds with the Cyborgs is the most prominent. Ironically though, her "cast mate" Ayako has a bit more of that hair-triggered temper & tendency to run in no questions asked that Jet's also pretty well known for.
While Emily and Nyoka's connection could just be seen as a nod to them both being from different Astro Boy adaptations, it's actually somewhat meant to be a nod to Astro's original older brother Cobalt, as she's the more light-hearted older "sibling" that helps take care of them compared to Lilulu's more distant and "aggressive" attitude towards her (at the beginning of their relationship, at least) like the role Atlas was cast in in the 80's & 2003 series.
- There's also a bit of metatextual fun with Emily's knight theming being somewhat of a nod to the Blue Knight, one of Astro's most prominent rivals/enemies. Though obviously, there's no such animosity between the two androids here.
Emily's "battle form" has been slightly redesigned & repurposed. Rather than a simple full-body upgrade, she's able to transform into the armor, a trait based primarily off of other transforming heroes, specifically the Metal Heroes and fellow android heroes Kikaider and Metalder due to their shared use of metallic armor and how she turns into her battle form by her body glowing, much like the Space Sheriffs, The "trigger" word for her transformation, "Change!", is even taken from the "trigger word" for the Kikaiders' transformation. Her head also doesn't change into the blank, expressionless red eyes and spikes replacing her "button" headband, most likely to represent how much it had changed her from the young, innocent girl she was made to resemble. Here, she obviously still maintains her normal head, her skin-like armor on her upper arms, and even her "necklace", as its been made into the "trigger" for her transformation, sort of like a Kamen Rider's belt. Her armor also has a few additional weapons, which are (naturally) based off of the Mazinger robots and a few other sources:
- The Rocket Punch was added, obviously, as another parallel to both of the Mazingers; though the Spiral Knuckle is mainly based off of Dangaioh's Boost Knuckle.
- The armor's Hand Beams are based off of Grendizer's move of the same name, right down to the design, and can be kind of seen as her version of Mazinger's Photon Beam.
- Her sword has also been "tricked out" in this series. In the original, it was just an ordinary sword. Here, it's been given the ability to absorb sources of energy and release blasts from it, an ability inspired by the Laser Blades & weapons like them used by characters from the Metal Heroes series.
- Her "Shining Star" finisher is meant to be a combination of Sasuke/NinjaRed and Jiraiya/NinjaBlack's signature sword techniques from Kakuranger.
- In a similar vein, her "Fire Sword" is based directly off of Bioman's Red1 and his Bio Sword's own Fire Sword attack and to a lesser extent Muteki Shogun's Flaming Shogun Sword to (quite obviously) be a showing of her and Agnes's bond, even before they become a couple.
- Her "Henshin" sequence is actually meant to be a sort of blend of all three Space Sheriffs' transformations: she starts by bringing her left fist up to her right shoulder like in the beginning of Gavan's "Jouchaku", then thrusts the right arm & fist to the side like in the middle of Sharivan's "Sekisha", and finishes by spinning both arms before crossing them in front of her chest like at the end of Shaider's "Shōketsu" and shouting "Change!" (the crossing arms in particular is to highlight her chest buttons glowing, indicating that her replica-A.E.F.D. is fully activated).
- The Moon Tiara Sword technique is inspired by Dancouga Nova's Dankuu Dankaiken attack.
