Axis Zeon (usually simply called Neo Zeon) are the main antagonistic force of Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ and are the antagonists of Knights of the Multiverse Season 2. They are a organized group of remnant members of the Principality of Zeon who retreated to the giant asteroid base Axis after the end of the One Year War and, after a chance meeting with a mysterious stranger who gave them a way to travel to other worlds, they changed their mission to unite the Multiverse under their flag. A portion of them tried to stage a coup, calling themselves the Glemy Faction.

Mobile Suits[]

Axis Zeon's Mobile Suit arsenal is a very mixed bunch, consisting of old Zeon suits used during the One Year War, suits used by the Titans and even the AEUG, and other newly-developed suits.

Junior Mobile Suits[]

In addition to the normal Mobile Suits, smaller mobile suits dubbed "Junior Mobile Suits" were developed to go into places that normal Mobile Suits couldn't reach and get more up-close and personal with the opponents they face during their quest across the Multiverse. They're also highly more maneuverable than the larger Mobile Suits thanks to gliding foils installed in their feet that allowed it to roll on the ground, and the muscle cylinders powering the limbs allow them to perform near human-like movements. Combined with their size making them much easier to mass-produce, they essentially became Neo Zeon's new main fighting force for ground-based operations.

However, this comes at a cost, as the units have extremely thin armor and use a highly combustible liquid in their artificial muscles. Thus, they're at a much higher chance of detonating compared to their larger brethern. Thusly, their pilots have a very low chance of survival, meaning piloting are often reserved for the best of the best... or those seen as the most expendable.

Gundams[]

As the war progressed, Axis started to develop their own series of Gundams, under the idea to turn the image of their greatest enemy during the One Year War into some of their greatest assets. Most of them are based off of other Gundams that they've collected data on from other parts of the Multiverse and mass-produced suits based off of other existing Gundams, such as the Zeta Gundam and Hyaku Shiki:

History[]

Pre-Series[]

Co-developed by the Principality and the Lunar Industrial Federation in Universal Year 0072 as a waypoint for the Jupiter Energy Fleet, the Axis base was built under strict secrecy. Like A Baoa Qu and Solomon, it was built atop an asteroid, allowing it to serve as a mobile base. Unlike the other two bases, which were sent to the Earth sphere, Axis remained hidden in the asteroid belt during the One Year War.

At the end of the War, when the Principality became the Republic of Zeon and formally stepped down its offensive, nearly half of the remaining Zeon forces disobeyed orders and fled the Earth sphere. These Zeon loyalist, including Zabi family loyalist, regrouped at the Axis base, where they could rebuild and reorganize in secrecy. Even the great Char Aznable made Axis his new home.

The primary goal of the Axis renegades was the restoration of the Zabi family. Their leader, Maharaja Karn, a former member of Degwin Zabi's inner circle, declared the infant Mineva Zabi the heir to the Principality. He set himself up as regent, organizing the forces until she should be old enough to rule herself.

Over the next two years, the Zeon forces focused their energy on converting Axis, originally a resource mine, into a military fortress. In order to accommodate the 30,000 refugees, the Mosa block of living quarters was constructed. The new facilities were comparable to the round colonies near Earth, allowing permanent residency. Despite the limited resources available at their isolated location, MS development continued unabated.

In May of UC 0081, Mineva's mother died, and in 0083, following the completion of Mosa, Maharaja Karn also passed away. The absence of leaders within the confined space threatened the community's stability. It was at this time that Char Aznable whose opinion was much respected on Axis, proposed making Maharaja's 16-year-old daughter Haman Karn the new regent. The Axis executive council approved the nomination, and a new leader took command.

Even though Haman had an older sister who had been Dozle Zabi's lover, the younger Karn was chosen to rule because of her natural leadership ability. Charismatic and a brilliant politician, Haman took control of the situation in no time. She rallied the people under her cause, proposing that Axis return to Earth and forcefully reestablish the Zabi family and conquer the Earth sphere. This promise of returning home as the new leadership gave hope to the people who had been forced to live isolated lives in the tight confines of Axis.

The notion that 30,000 ragtag soldiers could hope to conquer the Earth sphere was clearly impossible, but the promise inspired the people to rebuild at an astonishing rate. Under Haman's guidance, morale and productivity were up. As the months progressed, the pipe dream looked more and more feasible.

Shortly after taking command, Haman learned about the Delaz Fleet's revolt. Upholding her father's solemn promise made two years earlier to fight together, she sent an advance fleet to assist with Operation Stardust. Technically neutral, the Axis fleet primarily provided support services to the Delaz fleet.

Another motive in assisting the Delaz fleet was Haman's desire to pacify the other Zeon factions that had arisen in Axis. The Gihren, Dozle and Kycilia factions all had separate agendas, and all of them questioned Haman's loyalty to the Zabi name. By assisting Delaz, a supporter of Gihren, Haman earned back the trust of the dissidents, further strengthening her cause.1

On October 12, U.C. 0087, after a 20-month-long journey, Axis finally arrived in the Earth Sphere,. Because of its great military strength, Axis would be a powerful player in the Gryps Conflict and thus both the AEUG and the Titans sought to ally themselves with the former Principality members. The AEUG was the first party which got an audience with the leader of Axis, the then eight-year old Mineva, who revealed that Quattro was sent to Earth as an undercover agent. It was here that Quattro realized that Mineva was nothing more than a puppet for Haman, who was the true leader of Axis and when he confronted her about this he destroyed any chance of an alliance between the AEUG and Axis. As a result, Axis allied itself with the Titans on the following day.

At some point, Axis was fitted with large thermonuclear pulse thrusters for propulsion. On February 6, UC 0086, these thrusters were activated, and Axis began to travel toward the Earth Sphere. The trip took nearly two years; twenty months after it began to move, Axis arrived in the Earth Sphere, finding itself in the middle of the Gryps Conflict. Haman Karn used Axis as a mobile base and headquarters for her forces in the battle against both the AEUG and the Titans. At one point in the conflict, Axis itself was used as a weapon, ramming the Titans' base the Gate of Zedan and destroying it, though Axis suffered only minor damage.

Axis returned to the Earth Sphere on October 12, U.C. 0087, during the height of the Earth Federation's civil war, the Gryps Conflict. Both the Titans and the AEUG were eager to ally with the Axis fleet, thus virtually doubling their fleet. The AEUG was the first group to open negotiations with Axis, but failed as Haman chose to side with the Titans. Later, the AEUG secretly opened a second round of negotiations, where Haman agreed to assist them against the Titans. In truth, Haman's goal was to play the Titans and the AEUG against each other, so that whichever side emerged victorious would be sufficiently weakened, allowing her forces to overcome them and seize control of the Earth sphere.

11 days after the conclusion of Operation Maelstrom, Axis finally made its move. With both the Earth Federation and AEUG weakened by that civil war, and Axis Zeon suffering minimum loses, Haman renamed her forces "Neo Zeon" and took the chance to revive the glory of the Principality of Zeon. They started slowly by gaining favor with many colony citizens, including finding several Zeon remnant factions that had been scattered across the colonies. When they had built up a strong enough force of pilots and Mobile Suits, they invaded Earth, making contact with even more Zeon Remnant factions scattered across the planet to finally bring the Federation down. Though they would face resistance from the remains of the AEUG and the Earth-based resistance force, Karaba, they would manage to convince and "persuade" a good number of members from both groups to join their side, and eventually even get some members of the Federation and remnants of the Titans to do the same, though that wasn't relatively hard, as many pilots and officers were still disgusted by the actions both groups took during the Gryps War. Many inside the Federation government even chose to appease Haman, only for Haman to execute them after they revealed themselves to be as sleazy and pathetic as she thought. After many months of battling, Axis would emerge victorious.

Notes[]

Playing with the show's use of alternate timelines, KotM's version of Axis takes an alternate path for the Zeta Gundam movies, and the Universal Century as a whole, where in the eve of the Gryps War, Axis actually succeeds in taking over the Earth Sphere ala Gihren's Greed, then the majority of their story in the original ZZ series (like Glemy's rebellion and such) takes place. And as the series involves multiverses, to give the season a military-style threat that threatens all of reality, as a bit of an extension to L.O.V.E.M.U.F.F.I.N. last season with their more terroristic motives and only threatening a single world. This also helps to give some leeway as to why they use characters & Mobile Suits from future UC stories like the Zeon Remnants from Unicorn and Char's Counterattack, as well as to give their forces a much bigger force for the Knights to deal with.

In addition to the suits pulled in from Unicron and other future UC shows, this version of Axis Zeon uses mobile suits and battleships taken from other Gundam universes, some of them even used by the Earth Federation. To help these mobile suits fit into the faction a little better, their designations have all been changed to "AMX" (the normal designation given to Zeon mobile suits), and all the non-Gundams have been given the classic mono-eye (helped by how a good number of them have simple visors).

  • While the series makes it a point to include nearly every mobile suit from the original Gundam ZZ, the Hamma Hamma is the one exception due to, quite frankly, its incredibly ridiculous design.

Axis's role in this series is sort of like a bizarro version of 00's Celestial Being, with some members of the organization believing that they're doing what they're doing is for a greater good the same way CB did and sometimes even intervening in conflicts in the worlds they invade & arguably actually making some of them better. Of course, unlike Celestial Being, Axis's idea of ending conflict is taking control of the planets they "free" and forcing them to serve under their banner.

While this might be one of the more controversial inclusions in KotM, the only non-Gundam mechs included that Axis uses are the famous Scopedogs and its varients from Armored Trooper VOTOMS, which have been included to give the Knights a human-sized (well, sort of, since they're all mostly 3.8 meters/12.48 feet in size), though rest assured, they will not take the spotlight away from the other, larger Mobile Suits. Plus, it sort of works in canon since A.) the Scopedogs bare a striking resemblance to the Zaku II, and B.) the Universal Century and other Gundam shows already has mobile suits somewhat similar to the Dogs, such as the Junior Mobile Suit (from which these units get their designations, "JMS"), the Zuck (which is actually referred to as a Petite Mobile Suit, but "Junior" felt like a more fitting word) and the Mobile Workers in Iron Blooded Orphans. And to make sure their presence isn't overexerted, only the mechs used by grunt forces are featured in KotM, with character-specific mechs (on the good guys' side, at least) or mechs used specifically for the show's gladiatorial-type mecha tournament called "Battling" like the Berserga DT, WP & Imitate, the Brutishdog, Strong Bacchus have been omitted.

Many Zeon soldiers & higher-ups carry with them human-sized Beam Sabers, an idea taken directly from the enemy armies in other Tomino anime like Ideon and L-Gaim, mostly to make the "hand-to-hand" fights more dynamic/interesting.
